Juliette Aristides
Sottobosco, Paintings of the Forest Floor in Still Life
Dates: August 14-16
Tuition: $690
Skill Level: All Levels
Ordinary objects become compelling subjects when looked at through the eyes of an artist. Still life painting has long served both as an independent artistic tradition and a useful practice for helping painters develop technical skills. In this workshop, students explore the painting process in a unique way by creating a small-scale still life in oil, working from life. Emphasis is placed on core principles—composition, proportion, value structure, and color relationships—through a clear, sequential methodology rooted in classical practice.
In an unusual twist of still life we will be sketching part of every day outside. Creating a close up 'still life' from the forest. This genre is called sottobosco, paintings of the forest floor, which nods to the 17th century Dutch Golden Age. We will be focusing broadly on composition in these studies. You can bring some of your natural objects into the studio to do a painting that brings nature into the studio. Daily individual critiques provide focused guidance, helping each student refine their approach and bring their painting to a thoughtful finish. The intimacy of the workshop will allow for discussions on the nature of art and painting. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced artist, leave the workshop with a renewed confidence, a greater understanding of picture making and a renewed love of making art.
In addition to the materials list provided, please also bring a fold up chair and sketchpad.
