Blair Atherholt
Painting the Still Life in Oils Workshop
Venue: Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio in Langley, WA
Dates: June 12, 13 and 14, 2026
Time: 10 am - 4 pm
Tuition: $700
All Skill Levels
*It is recommended (but not required) that artists be somewhat familiar with oil painting in general, and with both paint mixing and basic color theory, specifically.
In this three-day workshop, students will take part in a step-by-step painting demonstration and will have the chance to recreate each step in their own painting. After 15-30 minutes of demonstration by Blair, students will spend approximately 30-45 minutes recreating the demonstrated step of the painting process. During this time, Blair will personally instruct and advise each student on their efforts.
Students will receive a pack of Rosemary & Co brushes and two gesso panels to both use for the workshop and keep for their own use. Each day’s painting will be broken down, generally, into the following steps:
-
Drawing in Oils
-
Painting the Main Subject
-
Establishing the Background
-
Painting the Supporting Subjects
-
Final Touches to Complete the Painting
Each day of the workshop will cover the entire process of Blair’s direct painting method.
Day 1, the workshop addresses the approach to painting a simple one-object still life. This will serve as an overall introduction to the workshop structure and as a warmup to the painting process in general.
Days 2 and 3 will be dedicated to a more complex still life painting, which will encompass Blair’s approach to painting a variety of textures and subjects. These concepts will be demonstrated within the context of a three or four-object still life which may include pieces of fruit, metal or glass vessels, and folded cloth or ribbon.
Everyone, Blair included, will work from the same high-resolution printed photograph of the subject matter (which he will provide), to avoid awkward viewing angles of one setup and to streamline the entire painting process. Students can also take the photo home with them to continue working on their painting, should they wish to do so.
Workshop times will be 10-1 and 2-5 pm unless otherwise decided. See Supply Information below.
