Painting the spirit of the person - A Portrait Workshop

Day 1

Suchitra will discuss color theory and explore how to understand seeing the color from life and mixing it on your palette. By way of a photo reference, a quick demonstration of how to see values and color will be covered where the concept of color seeing, color note comparison and mixing will be made clear.


Portrait painting from life: Suchitra will demonstrate the portrait from life in the second half and cover the fundamentals in understanding how to draw the shapes, paint the essence of shapes you see, and put them in their right place leading to a resemblance of the sitter that catches the spontaneity in your brushwork. Everyday there will be discussions on art
fundamentals, process and technique on the day’s demonstration painting, followed by question and answers.


Day 2

 

Suchitra will demonstrate another portrait painting in the morning and students will paint the same portrait from a life model with assistance from Suchitra in the second half of the day and continue to take it to a finish on Day 3


Day 3

 

Painting from life, students will continue from the previous day’s portrait painting and bring it to a final finish.


During the second half, Suchitra will offer her insights on the importance of bringing transformation into your life, work and how to sustain yourself physically and mentally in creating paintings that will touch people who see them. This topic is vital if you are truly looking to get to the next level in your work. This approach is very often overlooked and
stress is only on the technique of how to paint portraits.

Day 4

 

Students will paint the figure from life under Suchitra’s supervision. from the previous day’s portrait painting and bring it to a final finish. An hour will be relegated to critiques of every students work. Suchitra will offer her insights on the importance of bringing transformation into your life, work and how to sustain yourself physically and mentally in creating paintings that will move people who see them. This topic is vital if you are truly looking to get to the next level in your work. This approach is very often overlooked and stress is only on the technique of how to paint “portraits or Figures”

 

Critiques and insights will be shared to bring about a better understanding of the learning over the 4 days.
