Drawing on a toned ground
October 14 - 16
$550 (incl. materials)
Skill level: all levels
Learn the classical technique of drawing on preparing toned paper. I tone my paper with rabbit skin glue and dry pigments. I use color pencil with gouache to achieve a full tonal range to create studies for paintings, or fully realized finished drawings.
In the workshop, we will be drawing the portrait from life on toned paper on a green ground. Values are established first, then flesh tones are laid on top of the tonal underdrawing. Finally, finished touches are rendered with gouache highlights and shadows.
Students can also can work from their own source material if they prefer.
