COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class for beginning and continuing painters will focus on exploring and expanding knowledge of watercolor mediums using the landscape as subject material for expressing themes and ideas integral to controlling the process of making paintings.

The basics: Tools and Materials paints, papers, brushes Preparation—Considering Subject, Theme and Expression Composition—Elements of Landscape, Format, Arrangement, Space Color—Pallet, Color, Neutralization, Contrast

Thumbnail Roughs—Visual thinking and the Planning the Process

 

DEMONSTRATIONS

Paper and Surface Preparations for Watercolor Mediums Drawing as the beginning and preparation for painting How we see—Light / Dark Contrast Edges

Black and White—Rendering, Organizing Shapes in Tones Demonstration—Landscape Theme in Two Colors Thinking Visually—Analysis of What and How We See

The Landscape in Color, Value, Shape, Space Texture, Pattern, Line

 

OPAQUE AND HEAVY BODIED WATERCOLOR MEDIUMS

Various Mediums: Gouache, Acrylic, Water soluble Oil, Tempera, Caesine, Egg Tempera

Painting Surfaces —Papers, Hardboards, Canvas, etc Surface Preparations—Gesso, Grounds, Absorbent Grounds Paint Applications—Overwork, Glazing, Extenders, Additives Surface Finishes:  Gloss, SemiGloss, Matte

Transparent Watercolor with opaque white Tempera (Gauache)

Acrylic on Reclaimed boards

IN STUDIO PRACTICUM (CONTINUOUS)

Time will be allotted for participants to paint using examples from demonstrations or themes of their own choosing. Ample time will be devoted to interaction with each individual.
